The Janissary Exhibition: DC's Forgotten Turkish Female Superhero

This virtual exhibition has been curated by Michael Barngrover to bring attention to a largely forgotten Turkish female comic book superhero, the Janissary, a character created by Brian K. Vaughan and Steve Scott for DC Comics and which debuted as the featured character of JLA Annual #4, released in August, 2000. Summarizing elements of her origins and actions in the story, this exhibition uses the Janissary as a starting point to consider implicit and explicit messages about women and heroism.
