We built Spatial initially focused on productivity and collaboration. What became apparent was that the more accessible Spatial became, the more people started using Spatial for use cases outside of that core. Custom environments and our robust tech stack enabled artists like Federico Clapis, to embrace Spatial to curate their galleries.
A big part of the value of art is derived from the experience around it — both in sharing and selling art. Digital art and NFTs did not have a beautiful nor accessible way to curate galleries in an immersive way with their community. While our mobile version was very accessible it required a download. Now with our new interactive web app beta, artists could easily share not only their work but their vision for the entire experience. Invite your audience to join you in one click! With our open beta, throughout the month we will be adding more features that will allow you to be able to customize your galleries and feature them publicly on our platform. With the rise of crypto currencies and the changing landscape of investments and pop culture alike, so came the buzz around non fungible tokens (NFTs). What is NFT art? And what does AR/VR have to do with it?
NFTs are created by artists, they are beautiful and valuable works of art that people want to enjoy in a traditional way.
How do you make a museum or art gallery full of virtual assets? Rent a physical space and buy a bunch of TVs is one option — but more and more people are preferring to don VR headsets and make the entire experience virtual. This saves a lot of costs as well as the impact and hassle of curating in the physical world.
We had something amazing happen in 2021, as the NFT dialogue exploded onto the scene we saw artists and collectors start to jump into Spatial to host their private ateliers. Spatial enabled them to easily display their works in virtual galleries and connect with their community about them “face to face”. It is incredible for any start up to see an entirely new use case tied to popular culture arise organically. We geared many features in our 4.0 release towards the needs of the art community. This included MetaMask Integration, Pedestals, Frames, a new default Gallery environment, and a descriptive caption panel for art. Additionally our new web app allows for anyone, or a selected audience, to be able to jump in and explore our virtual art galleries without headsets.
Impact is an important word here. While our intention is to foster the careers and exhibits of artists, we understand there is an impact to supporting NFTs and the crypto community. We feel very strongly about supporting block chain technologies that are actively seeking to reduce their carbon footprint. We are actively working to integrate with them. One of our favorite things about working on Spatial is how we have been able to be involved in the sustainability initiatives of many companies and they aimed to significantly reduce travel and office space.
Our decision to build features to help foster this use case is exactly that. Galleries don’t need to be just for NFT creators, but for any artists. Like our friend YAK and his ELYX Museum in Spatial. We could not be more excited for such talented artists to begin displaying their works in Spatial.
